What is RPF SI 2026?

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) Sub-Inspector (SI) is a Group B (non-gazetted) Central Government uniformed post under the Ministry of Railways. RPF SIs are responsible for protecting railway property, passengers, and passenger area assets. They are empowered under the Railway Property (Unlawful Possession) Act, 1966, and play a frontline role in anti-trafficking, anti-trespassing, and passenger security operations.

RPF SIs work in both RPF (Railway Protection Force) and RPSF (Railway Protection Special Force). RPSF SIs are deployed for specialized tasks including escort duty on trains, VIP protection, and anti-Naxal operations in sensitive railway areas.

The selection is merit-based through a Computer Based Test (CBT), followed by a qualifying Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Measurement Test (PMT), and a final Document Verification. Only CBT marks form the final merit list — PET and PMT are pass/fail.

Major change (October 2025): through the Railway Protection Force (Amendment) Rules, 2025 — notified in the Gazette of India (G.S.R. 766(E)) — the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has replaced the Railway Recruitment Boards as the conducting body for RPF SI and Constable recruitment. Recruitment is now planned annually, physical and medical standards are aligned with CAPF norms, and the 2026 notification will be published on ssc.gov.in. Final eligibility, fee, and physical standards for 2026 will be confirmed in that notification.

6-Month Study Plan

Month 1·Arithmetic Foundation

Cover Number Systems, Percentage, Ratio, Profit & Loss, and SI/CI. Solve 20–30 Arithmetic questions daily. Start reading a daily newspaper (The Hindu or Dainik Jagran) for 15 minutes every morning — builds both General Awareness and reading habit. Finish Lucent's GK Chapter 1 (History) in parallel.

Month 2·Reasoning + Advanced Arithmetic

Complete all Reasoning topics — Series, Analogies, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, and Directions first. Move to Seating Arrangement and Syllogisms. For Arithmetic: tackle Time-Work, Speed-Distance, and Mensuration. Practice 1 topic mock daily.

Month 3·General Awareness – Static GK

This is the highest-scoring section at 50 marks. Complete Lucent's GK: History, Geography, Polity, Economy, and Science. Make a one-page cheat sheet per chapter. Study Indian Railways structure, RPF's role, important zones, and recent railway initiatives — these are frequently asked and often ignored.

Month 4·Current Affairs + Mock Tests Start

Cover last 6 months of Current Affairs using free monthly PDF capsules and the TaiyarHo weekly current affairs section. Read about government schemes, sports news, appointments, and awards. Start taking 1 full CBT mock per week. Analyse your weak spots — don't repeat mock tests without analysis.

Month 5·Revision + Physical Preparation

Final revision of all three subjects. Focus heavily on General Awareness — it's where toppers gain the most ground. Simultaneously, begin physical preparation: daily 1600 m run with a timer, practice long jump and high jump. Don't start physical prep only after CBT — PET comes quickly after results.

Month 6·Full-Speed Mocks + PET Readiness

Take 2–3 full CBT mocks per week. Target 80–90 out of 120. Analyse every mock. Ensure you're meeting PET standards: run 1600 m consistently under 6:30 (male) or 800 m under 4:00 (female). Keep current affairs current — read daily capsules till exam day.

Expert Preparation Tips

🎯

General Awareness (50 marks) is the single biggest differentiator in RPF SI. Top candidates score 42–48 in GA while weaker ones score 25–30. Make GA your highest priority — not Arithmetic. Spend at least 40% of your study time on GA and Current Affairs.

🏋️

Start physical preparation from Day 1 — not after CBT results. PET comes within 4–6 weeks of CBT result. Many candidates who clear CBT fail PET because they didn't prepare physically. Run 1600 m daily and practice long jump and high jump thrice a week.

🚂

RPF/Railways-specific GK is asked every year and often ignored by candidates. Study: RPF's role, RPSF, RPF Operations (anti-human trafficking, Meri Saheli), Indian Railways zones (18 zones), headquarter cities, Vande Bharat, Kavach TCAS, and major railway stations. These are easy marks.

⏱️

Time management in CBT is critical: 90 minutes, 120 questions — roughly 45 seconds per question. Never spend more than 60 seconds on any single question. Attempt GA first (fastest for well-prepared candidates), then Reasoning, then Arithmetic. Mark doubtful questions and return.

📏

Know the exact physical standards before you apply. Measure your height and chest (for males) at a clinic. If you're borderline on the chest measurement — train specifically for chest expansion. Candidates lose in PMT on a 1–2 cm shortfall that physical training could have fixed.

📰

Current Affairs in RPF SI focuses heavily on government schemes, India-specific developments, sports results, and awards from the last 6 months. International news is minimal. Study free monthly current affairs capsules — one capsule per month takes 2–3 hours and covers the entire month.

🎖️

RPF SI is a uniformed gazetted service — the interview / DV panel notices confidence, appearance, and awareness about the job. Know what RPF does, current crime issues on railways, and India's security scenario. Many candidates arrive for DV without knowing basic RPF facts — don't be one of them.

🔄

RPF SI CBT has NEGATIVE MARKING — ⅓ mark is deducted for every wrong answer (as per the 2024 CEN). Blind guessing is costly: only attempt a question if you can eliminate at least two options. Accuracy matters as much as attempts — leaving a truly unknown question blank costs nothing, but a wrong answer does.

DA is revised every 6 months (January & July). The 8th Pay Commission is NOT yet implemented — salaries remain under the 7th CPC.
Is RPF SI a gazetted post?
RPF SI is initially a non-gazetted Group B post. However, upon promotion to Inspector level, it becomes a gazetted post. Sub-Inspectors in RPF/RPSF hold significant authority — they are empowered to arrest, detain, and prosecute offenders under the Railway Property (Unlawful Possession) Act, 1966, and the Railways Act.
What is the selection process for RPF SI 2026?
The selection process has 4 stages: (1) CBT – Computer Based Test (120 questions, 90 minutes, ⅓ negative marking per wrong answer); (2) PET – Physical Efficiency Test (run, long jump, high jump — qualifying); (3) PMT – Physical Measurement Test (height, chest, weight — qualifying); (4) DV – Document Verification + Medical Examination. Only CBT marks count for final merit; PET and PMT are pass/fail.
Can female candidates apply for RPF SI?
Yes. Female candidates can apply for RPF SI with a reservation of 50% of vacancies reserved for female candidates in each category. Female physical standards are different: Height 157 cm (General/OBC) / 152 cm (SC/ST), weight minimum 48 kg. PET for females: 800 m run in 4 minutes, long jump 9 feet, high jump 3 feet. Age limit is 20–28 years (same as male).
Who conducts the RPF SI exam now — RRB or SSC?
From the 2025 revised rules onwards, the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts RPF SI and Constable recruitment. The Ministry of Railways notified the Railway Protection Force (Amendment) Rules, 2025 in the Gazette of India (G.S.R. 766(E)) in October 2025, shifting the recruitment from Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) to SSC, with annual cycles and CAPF-aligned physical and medical standards. The RPF SI 2024 cycle was the last one conducted through the RRBs.
