What is SBI PO 2026?

The SBI PO (Probationary Officer) exam is conducted annually by the State Bank of India (SBI) to recruit Probationary Officers for its branches across India. SBI is the country's largest public sector bank with over 22,000 branches and 1.4 lakh employees — making an SBI PO posting one of the most coveted banking careers in India.

A Probationary Officer joins as a management-level officer and undergoes a structured 2-year probation with training at SBI's dedicated training centres. After successful probation, the officer is confirmed as an Assistant Manager in Junior Management Grade Scale-I (JMGS-I).

What sets SBI PO apart is its Group Exercise (GE) round in Phase 3 — a unique stage not present in IBPS PO — which tests teamwork, communication, and leadership. With over 20–25 lakh applicants every cycle, SBI PO is one of India's most competitive yet rewarding banking exams.

🔔 Important Clarifications for 2026 Aspirants

💡

Psychometric Test in Phase 3 (New Addition)

SBI has introduced a Psychometric Test as a mandatory part of Phase 3 (along with the Group Exercise and Personal Interview). This test screens candidates for personality fit, decision-making style, and behavioural traits. Candidates must clear the Psychometric Test to proceed to the GE & Interview rounds. This replaces older cycles where only GE + Interview were conducted.

⚠️

5-Day Work Week — Not Yet Implemented

The 12th Bipartite Settlement (signed March 2024) includes a provision for all Saturdays to be bank holidays. However, this clause is still pending final government notification as of May 2026. Bank branches were officially open on Saturday, 3 May 2026 (1st/3rd/5th Saturdays remain working). Do not treat the 5-day work week as active yet — it is expected to come into effect once the Government of India issues the formal gazette notification.

💰

SBI Salary ≠ Central Pay Commission (Important Myth)

A common search query is “SBI PO 8th Pay Commission salary.” This is a misconception — SBI and all public sector banks follow IBA Bipartite Settlements, not the Central Pay Commission (CPC). The 8th Pay Commission applies only to Central Government employees (IAS, IPS, Railway staff, etc.). Banking sector salaries are governed by the 12th Bipartite Settlement (2022–27), which set the current pay structure. The next revision will come under the 13th BPS.

SBI PO 6-Month Study Plan

Month1
Quant Foundation

Number Series, Simplification, Percentage, Ratio & Proportion, SI/CI. Practice 30 arithmetic questions daily with a timer. Start reading a financial newspaper (Hindu BusinessLine or Economic Times) every morning for 15 minutes — this pays dividends in Banking Awareness.

Month2
Advanced Quant + Reasoning Start

DI — all types (bar, pie, caselet, mixed). SBI PO DI is harder than IBPS — focus heavily on caselet-based and mixed DI. Reasoning: Linear, Circular, Floor Puzzles. Master all variations — puzzles form 60–70% of the Reasoning section.

Month3
Complete Reasoning + English

Syllogisms (both direct and reverse), Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Input-Output. English: 2 RC passages daily. Error Spotting and Cloze Tests every day. Start Descriptive writing — one essay per week on banking or economy topics.

Month4
Banking Awareness + Computer Knowledge

This is your SBI-specific month. Learn SBI's history, subsidiaries, products, current leadership. RBI policies, banking terminology, government financial schemes. Computer Knowledge: 2–3 weeks of study is sufficient for full marks. Start sectional mock tests: 1 per subject per week.

Month5
Mains Pattern + Descriptive Paper

Practice advanced and mixed DI daily. Descriptive writing: one formal letter and one essay per week. Practise Group Discussion topics — banking reforms, digital payments, financial inclusion, economic policy. One full Mains-level mock per week.

Month6
Full Mocks + GD/Interview Prep

Take 2–3 full-length Prelims mocks per week. Analyse every mock — focus on wrong answers. Revise Banking Awareness twice. Prepare for Group Exercise: practise GD in groups or watch recordings online. Stay current on last 6 months of national and international news.

Expert Tips to Crack SBI PO 2026

🎯

Prelims is only a filter — aim for 65–70 correct out of 100, not all 100. Accuracy matters far more than attempting every question. Skipping tricky questions and securing your strong sections is the Prelims strategy.

📊

SBI PO DI is harder than IBPS PO. Caselet-based and mixed DI require strong calculation speed. Practise these daily from Month 2. Develop shortcuts — never calculate full fractions when approximate values work.

📝

The Descriptive Paper (Essay + Letter, 50 marks) is where SBI PO candidates separate from the rest. Prepare 10–15 banking and economy topics for essays. Use formal structure, simple English, and relevant data.

🏦

Know SBI inside out. Every interview panel asks about SBI's history, current MD & Chairman, subsidiaries, products, digital initiatives (YONO), and market position. Prepare a 2-minute SBI knowledge pitch.

🤝

The Group Exercise (GE) tests communication, leadership, and teamwork — not just knowledge. Practise GD in groups or online. Speak clearly, listen actively, and never be aggressive. Even 2–3 well-made points that build on others' ideas score high.

🔄

3 focused hours daily for 6 months is better than last-minute 14-hour cramming. Build a daily schedule with mock tests from Month 3. Analyse every mock — understand your mistake patterns before they become habits.

💡

Current Affairs carries 35–40 marks in Mains. Use Telegram channels (Adda247, Oliveboard) for free daily PDFs. Reading 15 minutes of financial news every morning for 6 months is more effective than bulk-reading before the exam.

🌐

Join Testbook or Oliveboard for free mock tests — SBI PO ranking is visible across lakhs of candidates. Use it to benchmark your performance. Aim to be in the top 10% after Month 4.
