1What is TNPSC Group 1 2026?
The TNPSC Group 1 exam (officially: Combined Civil Services Examination – I) is conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission to recruit candidates for the highest-ranking posts in Tamil Nadu state services. Often described as Tamil Nadu's equivalent of the UPSC Civil Services, this exam opens doors to coveted posts such as Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), District Registrar, and Assistant Commissioner.
The examination follows a three-tier structure — Prelims (qualifying), Mains (descriptive, merit-based), and Interview — closely mirroring the UPSC pattern. Final selection is based entirely on Mains (750 marks) + Interview (100 marks) = 850 total marks. Prelims marks are not added to the merit list.

3Eligibility Criteria 2026
🎓 Educational Qualification
Candidates must hold a Bachelor's Degree (in any discipline) from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India, or any Institution established by an Act of Parliament, or declared a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. The degree must follow the 10+2+3 pattern.
- For Assistant Commissioner (CT) posts — Law or Commerce degree holders are preferred.
- For Assistant Conservator of Forests — degree in Science or Engineering with specific subjects required.
- Final year students are generally permitted to apply but must produce the degree certificate at the Mains stage.
- Candidates must have studied Tamil as a subject at SSLC level or must pass the Tamil language eligibility test.

⚠️ Age relaxation for categories is applicable only to Tamil Nadu domicile candidates. Candidates from other states are treated as "Others" (General) regardless of community status.
🪪 Other Eligibility Conditions
- Nationality: Must be a citizen of India.
- Tamil Proficiency: Adequate knowledge of Tamil is mandatory. A Tamil Eligibility Test is part of the Mains examination.
- Physical Fitness: Selected candidates will undergo a medical examination before appointment.
- Physical Standards for DSP: Deputy Superintendent of Police (Category 1) and District Officer (Fire & Rescue Services) posts require meeting prescribed height, weight, and chest measurement standards.
- Character: Must be of good moral character with a clean criminal record.

Tamil Nadu GK is non-negotiable
TNPSC Group 1 questions are heavily Tamil Nadu-centric. History, geography, economy, culture, government schemes and current affairs specific to TN consistently account for 25–30% of Prelims questions. Treat TN GK as a separate subject with dedicated daily study time.
