As per the official TNPSC Annual Planner 2026, the next Group 2 & 2A combined notification is scheduled for 11 August 2026, and the Preliminary Exam for 25 October 2026 (tentative). The previous cycle (Notification 11/2025, 645 posts) is in its final stages — its Mains marks and rank position have already been published. Both are part of the same combined recruitment notification and share the same Prelims and Mains exam. The key difference is that Group 2 posts (like Sub-Registrar, Municipal Commissioner) have an Interview/Oral Test worth 40 marks after Mains, while Group 2A posts (like Revenue Officer, Personal Assistant) do not have an interview — their final selection is based solely on Mains marks. Candidates can apply for both simultaneously in one application.

The minimum educational qualification for TNPSC Group 2 and Group 2A is a Bachelor's degree (Graduation) in any discipline from a recognised university. For a few specific posts like Personal Assistant, typing proficiency in Tamil and English may also be required. 12th pass candidates are not eligible.

The age limit varies by category. Open Competition (OC) candidates must be 18–32 years. BC/BC(Muslim) candidates get an upper age relaxation of 3 years (up to 35). MBC/DNC candidates also get 3 years extra (up to 35). SC/ST candidates get 5 years extra (up to 37). Destitute widows and differently-abled candidates have special relaxations. Age is calculated as of 1 July of the recruitment year.

The Preliminary exam has 200 questions carrying 300 marks, to be completed in 3 hours. It consists of General Studies (75 questions), Aptitude & Mental Ability (25 questions), and General Tamil or General English (100 questions). There is no negative marking, and the qualifying mark is 90. The prelims is only a screening test — these marks are not counted in the final merit.

Salary varies by post. Most Group 2 posts fall in Pay Level 16 of Tamil Nadu Pay Commission, with a basic pay starting at ₹36,900/month and a pay range of ₹36,900 – ₹1,17,600/month. With DA, HRA, medical benefits, and other allowances, the gross monthly salary is typically ₹55,000–₹70,000/month depending on posting city. Group 2A posts are in similar or slightly lower pay levels depending on the specific post.
